Description

Cefuroxime tablets are commonly prescribed for the treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections. The tablets belong to the category of medications called cephalosporin antibiotics. Cefuroxime tablets are highly beneficial in the treatment of urinary tract infections (UTI), Mild to moderate lower respiratory tract infections (bronchitis), severe lower respiratory tract infections (pneumonia), pyelonephritis (kidney inflammation due to bacterial infection), uncomplicated gonorrhea (sexually transmitted infection), Lyme disease (caused due to biting of infected black-legged tick insect) in adults and children above 12 years of age. It is not effective in the treatment of viral diseases such as colds and other viral infections. 

Do not self-medicate the medicine. It is advised to swallow the whole tablet with a glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablets. Follow the dosage and duration prescribed by your doctor. Some users may experience a few side effects such as headache, dizziness,  stomach upset, overgrowth of candida (fungal skin infection), unpleasant taste in the mouth, diaper rashes, and eosinophilia (increased disease-fighting cells WBCs). Medical Benefits of Cefuroxime Tablets 

Cefuroxime is primarily used in the treatment of bacterial infections caused by gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It is highly effective in fighting several infections causing bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus para influenza, Streptococcus pneumonia, S. pyrogens, Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. 

Cefuroxime is also useful in the treatment of infections caused after surgery and in the early treatment of Lyme disease caused by bacteria (Borrelia burgdorferi) in adults and children over the age of 12 years. 

Directions for Use 

Carefully, read the manual given along with the Cefuroxime tablets. Follow the prescribed dosage and duration given by your doctor. It is advised to swallow the whole tablet with a glass of water. You can take the tablet with or without water or as suggested by your doctor. 

Side Effects of Cefuroxime Tablets 

There are mild to moderate side effects of Cefuroxime tablets that get resolved over time. Mostly the side effects are individualistic in nature and may not be the same in all the users. Drug Interactions

Cefuroxime tablets may interact with other medicines when taken together with other medicines. The tablets can also interact with certain food items and health conditions. Therefore, do not take Cefuroxime tablets with the following mentioned drugs: 

  • oral birth control pills
  • medicines that reduce gastric acidity (like antacids, omeprazole)
  • immuno-suppressing drugs (mycophenolate or mycophenolic acid)
  • medicines used for reducing uric acid (probenecid)
  • some urine glucose tests
  • typhoid and BCG vaccines

Safety Precautions 

  1. Do not take Cefuroxime tablets with alcohol as it may interact and cause adverse side effects. 
  1. Do not take Cefuroxime tablets without a doctor’s consultation if you are pregnant or breastfeeding your baby. 
  1. Store the tablet in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight.
  1. Keep the Cefuroxime tablets out of reach of children and pets. Properly dispose of expired and discarded medicines. 
  1. Avoid taking too many calcium-enriched foods and drinks as it might affect the working of Cefuroxime tablets. 
  1. Do not skip the dosages and complete the entire course of medicine to avoid antibiotic resistance.
